40TUDE–curing colon cancer
Take part in 40tude’s 2017 London SUP Charity Marathon!
Love paddleboarding and looking for a new challenge? Join 40tude and Active360 on Saturday, 10th June 2017 for a mass paddle over a marathon distance along the River Thames on stand-up paddleboards, and help raise money for a great cause.
40tude is inviting participants to register now for its 26-mile endurance SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) charity challenge, from Shepperton to Putney.
40tude curing colon cancer (registered charity number 1160500) is a rapidly expanding group of people who are taking action against the second biggest cancer killer in the Western world – colon cancer. It supports pioneering projects at St Mark’s Hospital in Harrow, a world-leading centre for research and the treatment of bowel disorders.
40tude’s funding is helping the development of leading-edge techniques to transform the diagnosis and treatment of colon cancer, such as the FLEX project – a new, minimally invasive surgical technique that could be rolled out across the UK and potentially the world. We’re delighted the technique is being trialled now on patients at St. Mark’s, already saving lives.
“Our progress with the FLEX project would not have been possible without the support of 40tude,” explains Dr. Andy Currie of St. Mark’s Hospital. “40tude have funded the development and the trial of an entirely new technique and this investment means we can now offer a new surgical intervention to patients that was not available, and is not currently available, anywhere else in the world.”
Those who’ve paddled 40tude’s previous SUP marathons have raised a fantastic total of over £150,000 to date, and the funds raised this year will help the charity support further projects at St. Mark’s. These include a programme to improve the screening for early-stage detection of this condition - vital because if colon cancer is discovered early, the survival rates can be excellent.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding is the world’s fastest growing watersport and once again 40tude is working with paddleboard specialists Active360 to deliver the 2017 London SUP Marathon. Active360 is at the forefront of developing SUP in London and across the UK, and offers lessons, coaching, private parties, trips and holidays in the UK and abroad, in addition to accredited skills courses and SUP Yoga.
Back for a fifth year, the event route combines tidal and non-tidal sections of the Thames – passing through three locks and under 14 bridges while taking in some of the river’s most picturesque sights – including views of Hampton Court, Syon House, Kew Gardens, Ham House and Richmond Hill.
Whether you’re completely new to the sport or an experienced paddler, the day is guaranteed to be a lot of fun – as can be seen by viewing this short film of 40tude’s 2016 SUP Marathon.
Places are limited, so get in touch early to avoid disappointment. For more details about this event please contact Kate at firstname.lastname@example.org
