VAIL,CO -- The Vail Valley Foundation just announced that Olympian, U.S. Ski Team member and World Cup veteran skier Steven Nyman will compete at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado June 3 - 6. Nyman will be competing in this year's Stand Up Paddling (SUP) competitions, a new edition to the Games this year.

Nyman, regarded as one of America's best competitive downhill ski racers, has been SUP riding for five years now. He's competed in flat water races, but his debut at the Teva Mountain Games marks his first river race. According to Nyman, the similarities between ski racing and SUP racing make the Teva Mountain Games an ideal race event for him to get in some off-season practice.
"It's really great training for my skiing," says Nyman. "It requires a lot of balance and core strength along with awareness."

The Stand Up Paddling competitions this year include the First Ascent SUP Surf Sprint presented by C4 Waterman, which is similar to the classic Down River Sprint with SUPers racing against the clock on a 3-mile stretch of Gore Creek through icy waters and class II - III rapids, and the First Ascent SUP Surf Cross presented by C4 Waterman, which is an every-man-for-himself battle royal on Gore Creek. Think Skier Cross on SUP boards in class II-III waters.

Other athletes at the top of their game competing this year include Brad Ludden, founder of First Descents and named in top ten adventure athletes by Outside Magazine; Tao Berman, considered one of the world's top extreme kayakers; Alex Johnson, last year's Bouldering World Cup gold medalist at the Games; Jeff Lenosky, three-time US Mountain Bike Trials champ and two-time Teva Mountain Games champion; Raimana Von Bastolaer, one of Tahiti's most respected big wave surfers; Brian Keaulana and Todd Bradley, C4 Waterman co-founders. The athlete lineup is subject to change.

The sport competitions at this year's Teva Mountain Games, the nation's largest outdoor adventure event, include World Cup and amateur climbing, kayaking, rafting, mountain biking, road cycling, trail running, a half marathon, fly-fishing and stand up paddling. In addition to competitive adventure sports, the Teva Mountain Games also include a photography competition, interactive exhibition and demo areas, DockDog canine competitions, the Outdoor Adventure Film School, an interactive family area, free concerts and mountain lifestyle parties.
