California paddlers have the best of both worlds. They can ride the crest of coastal breakers, find the many waterways for workouts and cruise through waves or rough waters. There are hundreds of paddle hot spots in the state, but we focused on three SoCal areas considered SUP-friendly and safe.

Boasting scenic views around the cove, Dana Point Harbor is a beautiful and panoramic place to
paddle. It was named after author and seaman Richard Henry Dana, who arrived during the hide
trading days of the 1830s and called it “the only romantic spot on the coast.” Dana would later describe
the charm of the steep-cliff cove in his renowned book, Two Years Before the Mast.
Also known as Bahia Capistrano back in the day, Dana Point was the major port between San
Diego and Santa Barbara. When dredging took place, removing the famous surf spot off Dana
Point in 1966, local surfers grieved by referring to their loss as “Killer Dana.”

Today, the safe harbor-way is a place where stand-up paddlers can find ample parking. Its
accommodations also boast showers and restrooms, and one can launch off Baby Beach for a nice
paddle around the break wall. It allows for a nice workout among the outrigger canoe paddlers,
kayakers and beach users. Restaurants, inns, motels and board rental shops also surround the area.
If you’re looking to rent a board and paddle, be sure and take advantage of Infinity Surf Shop,
