In the early 1900s, the community of Newport Beach and Orange County made a huge effort to build one of the most beautiful harbors along the Southern California coastline. Rerouting the Santa Ana River from the Lower Bay into smaller channelwaterways was the birth of the harbor’s formation and the Newport Beach Yacht Club.
Soon to follow were the “beautiful people” of the Golden State. By the late 1940s and 50s, the area was surrounded by Hollywood celebrities: James Cagney, Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Spencer Tracy, and John Wayne, to name a few, all with their lavish boats and ocean lifestyle. Today, among the pelicans, herons, gulls and famed black swans, you can find the perfect place to paddle. Newport Harbor Balboa is a spot to cruise without the crowds or go for a quick workout. If you’re looking for equipment or paddle lessons, be sure to check out Paddle Power, just a stone’s throw away from the launching area. See Jim and Julie Smiley, guaranteed to get you up and paddling in five minutes!
